a Kindle, a Kobo, a Sony, a Nook

a tinker, a tailor, a soldier, a book
I’m getting more and more E books on my computer. I read them with “apps” but I’m thinking it would be nice to curl up in a chair, away from the workstation, and escape with my “book” and my tea.
But what do I buy?
Do I want E Ink Pearl or LCD?
And if I get the E Ink, do I want an add-on light? Or a built-in?
Do I protect my E reader with a sleeve?
Or do I want a more book-like cover to hold?
Do I buy suede, silicone, leather, Oberon? The choices are overwhelming.
My friend Jan O’Hara has a slightly different problem, and a cautionary tale. Read it here.

Kindle, Kindle, Kindle!
I’ve got a Kindle.
I don’t think anyone has made the perfect ebook reader yet but my wish list would be: color, readable in daylight or night, inside the house or out, able to buy and download from anyone and anywhere on the internet.
That said, I bought a Kindle along with the Kindle cover with the light attachment. Love the flexibility of being able to read anywhere, just like I could with a print book. Love the fact that I can use the wireless connection to buy on the spot. 🙂
I have a Sony and I love it but for the fact that it’s really freakin’ heavy because of the aluminum (I think) face plate. But hey…it’s red where I can see it. I don’t have wireless on it because I decided that it wasn’t the best for me to have instant connection to an ebook store.
I sell Kobos. And considering all the damaged ones I return, see, hear about, don’t protect it with a sleeve. Get a cover with some firmness because the little bit of pressure on those screens will break your heart (no matter what brand). The book style covers with cardboard in them are best.
I contemplate buying a Kindle so I can read all the ebooks people are self-publishing but I am not the biggest Amazon fan. Then I’m all “if I buy an iPad and I can do it all!” I was lusting over Sasha White’s at the fall industry meeting. I want something that shows the pretty covers instead of something in greyscale.
I’m cheap and not willing to pay the ongoing monthly fees that come with tablets, so the iPad and similar are out. I wanted a long battery life, so that meant e-Ink, and so far I’m very happy with my choice of the Kindle.
I’d probably give the Fire a chance, but there’s no evidence it’ll come to Canada soon. Even if you can get the device, using anything on it more than books isn’t guaranteed. Amazon has many promotions and options that end at the border.
Kindle 4, Sony 1
Thank you everybody! This is great advice and will help the Xmas shopping decision.
I love my Sony e Reader. The only problem I’ve had is syncing within the Reader Library.
